Being the Client for a Change: What We Learned Working with SHOP

As architects and engineers, we spend most of our time guiding clients through complex decisions. We help define goals, evaluate tradeoffs, and provide clarity when things feel uncertain. It’s a role we’re comfortable in—and one we take seriously.

Recently, while working with SHOP (weareshop.agency) on our brand refresh, we had the opportunity to experience that process from the other side.

For a change, we were the client.

That perspective proved to be both humbling and valuable—and it reinforced many of the principles we strive to bring to our own work at Gridwork AE.

Gaining perspective by stepping into the client role

Working with SHOP required us to slow down and really examine who we are, how we work, and what matters most to us. Digging into our values, priorities, and needs was more challenging than we expected.

Not because we hadn’t thought about them before—but because articulating them clearly, consistently, and honestly takes work. There were moments where the answers weren’t obvious, and where we had to sit with uncertainty before clarity emerged.

That experience was an important reminder: even experienced professionals need guidance when navigating complex, open‑ended decisions.

The importance of an experienced guide

One of the most impactful aspects of working with SHOP was having an experienced team to lead us through the process. Erin and Brian brought structure, insight, and a steady hand—knowing when to push, when to listen, and when to help us reframe our thinking.

Their approach created space for productive conversations and better decisions. Each step in the process felt intentional, and each discussion built on the last.

As designers, we understand the value of a clear process. Experiencing it firsthand reinforced just how much confidence it provides—especially when the outcomes matter and the path forward isn’t always clear.

Responsiveness and real partnership

Throughout the process, Erin and Brian were consistently responsive and hardworking. Questions were answered quickly, feedback was thoughtful, and the collaboration felt genuinely hands‑on.

That level of engagement builds trust. It allows clients to focus on making good decisions instead of worrying about whether things are moving forward.

It’s also a reminder of how much responsiveness matters—not as a courtesy, but as a core part of effective professional service.

A result that exceeded expectations

The end result of the rebrand exceeded our expectations. The response has been overwhelmingly positive, and more importantly, the new brand truly captures who we are and how we work.

It feels authentic. It feels aligned. And it gives us confidence that our external identity now matches the clarity and intention we bring to our projects.

Carrying the lessons forward

Being the client was a valuable reminder of what our own clients experience every day. Even with expertise and good intentions, complex processes can feel challenging without the right guidance.

Our work with SHOP reaffirmed why we place so much emphasis on clarity, responsiveness, and hands‑on collaboration at Gridwork AE. These aren’t abstract ideals—they’re what make difficult work feel manageable and productive.

We’re grateful for the experience, for the partnership, and for the reminder that good process—and good people—make all the difference.
