The client for this ground-up child care facility, located in Hillsboro, Oregon, came to us with very clear requirements for their project, both to meet budget concerns and to meet well-being standards for the children and caregivers that would use the building. LAE ensured, through multiple check-ins and an open dialogue, that all of their standards were met at each stage of the project.
The one area that the client didn’t have many requirements for was the exterior design or overall form of the building. LAE wanted the design of the building to reflect the same outstanding care that their client offered their own clients, while also being mindful of the project budget.
The eight classrooms are filled with natural light through the use of clerestories and have high vaulted spaces that show off the glulam beams of the building’s structure. Natural tones of cedar and brick make the front entrance of the building warm and welcoming. The south side of the building was designed to have a large overhang that will reduce glare and solar heat gain in the summer.
Along with improving the site by adding a parking area, children’s play areas, and landscaping; the project was also required to make public right-of-way improvements. LAE acted as design manager for a project team including civil, landscape, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing consultants.
